🤔 Reflection Question
Can you echo your voice off of another surface in the distance so animals think you are there?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
While technically possible through the physics of acoustic reflection, deceiving an animal's location via an echo is extremely difficult because most animals possess highly advanced binaural hearing that allows them to distinguish between a primary sound and its secondary reflection. For this trick to work, you must stay perfectly hidden behind a sound-absorbent barrier—like a thick tree or hill—to prevent your direct voice from reaching the animal, while projecting your call toward a hard, flat surface like a cliff face that acts as a sonic mirror. Even then, predators and prey often rely on other senses, such as smell or the detection of specific frequency patterns, which can immediately reveal your true position if the wind shifts or the echo lacks the natural depth of a living creature.
