Because humans often consume a diet high in proteins and fats, our waste frequently contains undigested nutrients that serve as a calorie-dense snack for a scavenger; this behavior, known as coprophagia, is a survival strategy common among canids and likely played a major role in drawing early wolves toward human settlements. Beyond nutrition, wolves experience their world through an incredibly sophisticated olfactory system, and human waste provides a wealth of biological data regarding the health, diet, and identity of the person who left it. Furthermore, wolves may be attracted to the scent for camouflage purposes, often rolling in strong-smelling substances to mask their own natural odor, which allows them to sneak up on prey without being detected. Consequently, what humans perceive as waste, a wolf perceives as both a vital survival resource and a critical source of territorial information.
