🤔 Reflection Question
How big can a bull moose grow?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
Moose are the largest of all deer species, with mature bull moose reaching massive proportions that vary significantly by subspecies. The Alaska-Yukon moose (Alces alces gigas) is the largest, with adult bulls typically standing nearly 7 feet tall (2.1 meters) at the shoulder and weighing between 1,200 and 1,600 pounds. In contrast, the smaller Shiras moose of the Rocky Mountains usually reaches about 6 feet at the shoulder and weighs up to 1,200 pounds. Beyond their height, their total body length spans 8 to 10 feet, and their iconic palmated antlers can grow over 6 feet wide (72+ inches), sometimes weighing up to 75 pounds on their own. This immense size is supported by a specialized diet, as they can consume up to 60 pounds of vegetation daily, including sodium-rich aquatic plants they dive up to 20 feet underwater to reach. The historical record for the largest confirmed bull moose was an Alaskan specimen from 1897 that weighed 1,808 pounds and stood 7 feet 8 inches tall at the shoulder.
