🤔 Reflection Question

How hard was it for the British to bring elephants there?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.

Bringing elephants to the Andaman Islands in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was a significant, logistically demanding logistical task managed by British colonial authorities to support the timber industry. It required shipping them from Burma and India, with some trained to swim between islands to transport logs. Elephants were essential for logging operations, particularly for hauling timber. They were transported via ships from mainland India and Burma starting in the late 19th century. The process involved moving heavy, live cargo over long distances by sea, followed by training them to work in a, for them, foreign island environment, which included learning to swim across saltwater channels. Specialized veterinary care was involved, with officials like Dr. Kandrathanda Ganapathy managing the importation. Following the decline of the timber industry, many elephants were released or escaped, forming a feral population on Interview Island and North Andaman.
