🤔 Reflection Question
How similar are baboons to people?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
Baboons are remarkably similar to humans, sharing approximately 91% to 94% of their DNA. As close evolutionary relatives, they exhibit human-like complex social structures, varied diets, and similar physiological traits. They are used as models for human health research due to parallels in bone metabolism, cardiovascular systems, and even vowel-like vocalizations. Studies indicate a 94% genetic similarity. They share a high percentage of homologous genes, particularly in immune system antibody production. Baboons live in complex, hierarchical groups of 20 to 150 individuals, showing, strong social bonds, friendship, and intricate emotional behaviors. They are highly intelligent, terrestrial primates with similar brain structures. Their bone structure, turnover rates, and susceptibility to certain diseases (e.g., osteoporosis) make them excellent models for human bone health research. Research has shown that baboons can produce five distinct vowel sounds, which are eerily similar to human speech sounds, suggesting the anatomical basis for language existed long before humans evolved. Like humans, baboons are omnivorous and highly adaptable to different environments.
