🤔 Reflection Question

How important is protein for survival in the Amazon?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.

Protein is critically important for long-term survival and health in the Amazon rainforest, acting as the primary source of nutrition for over 11 million rural inhabitants. While carbohydrates (like cassava) provide immediate energy, protein from hunting and fishing is essential for maintaining muscle mass, supporting immune function, and preventing nutritional deficiencies. For rural Amazonian communities, wild meat and fish are the main, often exclusive, sources of daily protein, iron, and zinc, supplying up to half of daily nutritional needs. A lack of dietary protein, particularly in combination with high-parasite environments, leads to rapid health decline,, known as wasting away. Consumption of wild meat is specifically linked to lower rates of anemia in children. Fish is the most crucial protein source for riverine communities, while game meat—such as peccaries, tapirs, monkeys, and turtles—provides critical nutrients.
