Illegal gold mining in the Amazon is a massive, multi-billion dollar industry that now rivals drug trafficking in both profitability and organized crime involvement. It acts as a primary driver of environmental collapse and a tool for state capture by criminal networks. Over 2 million hectares (nearly 5 million acres) of the Amazon have been deforested for mining, with more than half occurring in the last six years. In Brazil alone, mining on Indigenous lands grew by 625% between 2010 and 2021. In Brazil, the trade generates over $2 billion annually. In Peru, it causes estimated annual losses of $6 billion, generating higher profits than cocaine. There are at least 4,114 illegal mining sites across the Amazon basin, including over 1,400 in Venezuela.
