🧠 Insight
Scientists believe parts of the Amazon are man-made or heavily managed because archaeological and ecological evidence shows indigenous populations actively shaped the ecosystem for thousands of years before 1492. Research indicates that pre-Columbian inhabitants domesticated trees, creating hyperdominant species, and modified soil to increase fertility. A significant portion of the Amazon is dominated by plant species that were cultivated or promoted by ancient humans, such as Brazil nut, cocoa, and palm trees. Studies found that useful, domesticated tree species are much more abundant near ancient archaeological sites. Across the Amazon, researchers have found patches of extremely fertile, nutrient-rich soil known as terra preta, which was artificially created by indigenous populations through the intentional burning and deposition of waste, charcoal, and bones.
