“You were like: 'Crazy thing about the Amazon, it's largely man-made'”
— Paul Rosolie

🧠 Insight
'Between 0.1% and 10% of the Amazon contains Amazonian Dark Earth (terra preta), a highly fertile soil created by pre-Columbian civilizations. This soil was manufactured using a mix of charcoal, organic waste, and pottery shards to make the naturally poor soil productive for agriculture. Of the roughly 16,000 tree species in the Amazon, just 227 species (about 1%) account for half of all trees. Many of these hyperdominant species—such as cacao, acai, and Brazil nuts—were domesticated or selectively favored by indigenous peoples, suggesting the forest is partly a surviving heritage of ancient gardens. Recent LiDAR technology has revealed thousands of hidden earthworks, including garden cities, canals, and road networks, proving that the region once supported millions of people who actively managed the ecosystem. Some studies indicate that approximately 11.8% of the Amazon’s terra firme (upland) forests were intentionally shaped by human biodiversity stewardship.'
