I'd say that these people were just curious as to what Paul and the community was doing in the Amazon. They saw that they had all those stuff and supplies and wanted to get some of them. So they chose a peaceful way to do so and approach them in non threatening way. They most likely saw these people doing that over a course of a really long time and came to the conclussion that they are not doing anything wrong. Imagine if they stuck to what they were doing before and started shooting arrows at them. Complete chaos would unfold.
