Why are some islands formed like that?

🧠 Insight
'Islands form in chains primarily because tectonic plates move slowly over stationary volcanic 'hotspots' in the Earth's mantle. As the plate drifts, the hotspot continuously punches through, creating new volcanoes while moving older, inactive ones away. This process creates a linear, aging sequence of islands, with the youngest closest to the heat source. A fixed plume of magma from deep within the Earth's mantle melts through the tectonic plate, creating a volcano that eventually rises above the sea surface.
