I doubt that would be something like a canteen for water, as carrying that around your neck gets hard after an hour, so not something that's really practical. So if it is for carrying something it must be something light, like some types of medicinal herbs or plants that help in some way or provide food in need. Also, it's possible that they use it to carry personal belongings that are of high value to them, that's why they take such good care of it and try not to get it wet. However it is possible that it's used to carry trinkets and other such things of their own religion. Things in which they placed their trust as a tribe and those two guys are there chosen by them to take care of it and make sure it stays safe.
