🧠 Insight
'Vincent van Gogh's motivation for The Starry Night stemmed from his intense emotional and mental state while at an asylum in Saint-Rémy, viewing the night sky as a source of solace and spiritual connection, expressing deep personal feelings through swirling brushstrokes, symbolic cypress trees (death/hope), and an idealized village representing humanity's place within the cosmic drama, a blend of observation, memory, and profound inner turmoil.' Personally, from the moment I saw that painting as a kid I felt like there was some darker motivation behind it. Now that it could be because of his stay at an asylum while he was painting it, it gives me some clarification on why the painting felt that way.
