🤔 Reflection Question

How does musk ox survive in the barren wilderness of the Arctic?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.

Musk oxen are ancient survivors from the Pleistocene era that employ remarkable physiological and behavioral strategies to endure the high Arctic's extreme conditions. Their most critical asset is their multi-layered coat, featuring an inner layer of qiviut that is so insulating it allows them to stand still in howling blizzards without losing core body heat. Unlike many Arctic herbivores, they possess a highly efficient digestive system with a large rumen that acts as a fermentation vat, breaking down low-quality woody plants and dried sedges into usable energy over several days. To conserve this energy, they drastically reduce their activity levels during the dark winter months, often standing motionless for hours to lower their metabolic rate. Furthermore, their specialized hooves are asymmetrical and sharp-edged, acting like natural ice axes to provide traction on frozen slopes and reach hidden vegetation beneath the permafrost.
