🤔 Reflection Question
Should spear hunting be banned globally?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
The ethical controversy surrounding spear hunting stems from the fact that spears primarily kill through hemorrhaging rather than the immediate nervous system collapse caused by modern firearms. While a spear can be lethal, it lacks the hydrostatic shock of a bullet, meaning an animal often dies slowly from blood loss—a process that can take a significant amount of time and cause extreme physiological distress. This creates a moral conflict: proponents argue the fair chase requires the hunter to be closer and more skilled, but critics maintain that using a weapon with such a low margin for error is inherently inhumane. Ultimately, because the likelihood of a non-lethal wound or a prolonged, painful death is much higher with a spear, many wildlife experts and ethicists view the practice as an unnecessary sacrifice of animal welfare for the sake of hunter prestige.
