As of April 2026, the thylacine de-extinction project led by Colossal Biosciences and the TIGRR Lab has achieved a near-complete genetic blueprint, with the reconstructed genome now estimated at 99.9% accuracy and only 45 remaining gaps in the sequence. Utilizing CRISPR-Cas9 multiplex editing, researchers have successfully executed over 300 unique genetic changes into a fat-tailed dunnart cell line, specifically targeting Thylacine Wolf Accelerated Regions (TWARs) to drive the convergent craniofacial morphology—such as the distinctive long snout and wide 80-degree jaw gape—characteristic of the extinct predator. To overcome the physical size disparity between the dunnart host and the thylacine, the team has successfully developed assisted reproductive technologies (ART) that can culture fertilized marsupial embryos in an artificial uterus device for over half the gestation period. Current scientific projections from lead researcher Andrew Pask estimate the birth of the first functional proxy thylacine could occur by the mid-2030s, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the species' extinction.
