🤔 Reflection Question
Do bondo apes still exist today?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
Yes, Bili apes (also known as Bondo apes) still exist today in the Bili Forest of the northern Democratic Republic of the Congo, though they are officially classified by scientists as a unique population of Eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii). For decades, they were considered a myth—referred to locally as lion killers and rumored to be a giant, aggressive new species or even a hybrid of a chimpanzee and a gorilla. Their legend grew due to unusual characteristics, such as a larger-than-average size, a distinct facial appearance with prominent brow ridges, and the peculiar habit of nesting on the ground like gorillas rather than in trees like typical chimpanzees. While DNA testing in 2003 confirmed they are genetically identical to other eastern chimps, they possess a fascinatingly distinct culture and are remarkably curious—often choosing to stare at humans with interest rather than flee. Today, this unique population is seriously threatened by habitat loss from illegal gold mining and the bushmeat trade, leading to ongoing conservation efforts to protect their remote forest kingdom.
