🤔 Reflection Question
What is the terra preta soil?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
Terra preta is a type of exceptionally fertile, dark-colored soil found in the Amazon Basin that was created by ancient indigenous civilizations between 450 BC and 950 AD. Unlike the surrounding nutrient-poor tropical earth, this Amazonian dark earth was man-made through the intentional incorporation of biochar (charcoal), animal bones, broken pottery, and organic waste into the ground. This unique mixture created a stable ecosystem that retains high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium for centuries without exhausting the nutrients. Today, it is highly valued by scientists not only for its agricultural productivity but also for its ability to trap carbon in the soil, offering a potential tool for fighting climate change.
