🤔 Reflection Question
How do the ant colonies communicate between each other?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
Ant colonies communicate primarily through a sophisticated language of chemicals called pheromones, which they detect using their sensitive antennae. Each colony possesses a unique signature scent that allows ants to immediately distinguish between a nestmate and a stranger from a rival colony; if the scents don't match, it often triggers defensive or aggressive behavior. Beyond chemistry, ants use tactile signals, like drumming their antennae against one another, and stridulation, where they rub body parts together to create vibrations that signal distress or the discovery of a high-quality food source. While communication between separate colonies is often competitive—using scent markers to define territorial boundaries—some invasive species can form supercolonies where multiple nests share a compatible chemical identity, allowing them to cooperate rather than fight.
