🤔 Reflection Question

How does a Tarantula hawk consume and lay eggs?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.

The reproductive cycle of the tarantula hawk is a grim display of biological precision: an adult female first paralyzes a tarantula with a powerful sting to its nerve center, drags the immobile but living spider into a burrow, and lays a single egg on its abdomen. Once the egg hatches, the larva bores into the spider’s body to feed; it instinctively consumes non-essential tissues like fat and hemolymph first, purposely avoiding the vital organs to keep the tarantula alive and fresh for as long as possible. Only in its final stage of growth does the larva consume the heart and nervous system—killing the host—before spinning a cocoon inside the hollowed-out carcass to pupate and eventually emerge as a nectar-drinking adult.
