🤔 Reflection Question

The biggest existential risks to human life?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.

In terms of sheer cosmic scale, the biggest existential risks are those that would not only end human civilization but permanently extinguish all life or the potential for it to ever re-emerge. These high-consequence events often involve the total loss of Earth’s habitability or the destruction of the physical environment itself. Beyond the immediate threats of AI misalignment or nuclear winter, the bigger risks include catastrophic bioengineering—the creation of self-replicating, lethal pathogens that could bypass any immune system—and supervolcanic eruptions capable of plunging the planet into a multi-decade volcanic winter. On an even grander scale, large-scale asteroid impacts (similar to the one that ended the dinosaurs) or nearby gamma-ray bursts could strip away the atmosphere entirely. Finally, the most permanent risk is the trapping of human potential, where a global totalitarian regime or a permanent technological collapse prevents humanity from ever recovering, effectively ending our future before it truly begins.
