🤔 Reflection Question

How many charities are a scam currently in the world?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.

Precise global numbers for fraudulent charities are difficult to track as new scams emerge daily, especially during crises, but recent data indicates a significant and growing threat. In 2025, approximately 34% of surveyed charities reported experiencing actual or attempted fraud, a notable figure even as some regions saw a slight decrease from the previous year. The scale of this issue is further highlighted by the registration of over 3,000 fake charity websites and 5,000 fraudulent domains in 2023 alone, designed to mimic legitimate organizations and deceive donors. Beyond completely fake entities, internal fraud is a major concern, with 38% of perpetrators being insiders such as employees or volunteers. In the United States, reported losses to charity fraud reached approximately $200 million in 2022, while the UK saw an estimated 18,000 fraud cases across the sector in a single 12-month period ending in 2025. With the rise of AI-enabled impersonation and professionalized scam-as-a-service operations, more than half of charitable organizations expect these threats to increase throughout 2026.
