In November 2025, climate activist Greta Thunberg and approximately 35 other members of Extinction Rebellion were issued a 48-hour ban from Venice and fined €150 ($172) each after they dyed the Grand Canal a fluorescent green. The protest, which used a non-toxic tracer dye called fluorescein, was intended to highlight climate collapse and criticize the perceived failures of the COP30 climate summit regarding fossil fuel restrictions. Local authorities, including Veneto region Governor Luca Zaia, strongly condemned the act as vandalism that was disrespectful to the city's fragile history and ironically required restoration efforts that could generate additional pollution. This demonstration was part of a broader coordinated effort where activists dyed waterways and fountains in 10 different Italian cities, including Milan, Bologna, and Palermo.
