🤔 Reflection Question
How much land did the Native Americans get after the war?
Hit reply — I’d love to hear your take.
Historically, Native Americans did not get land as a reward for their participation in wars; rather, conflicts almost always resulted in the massive, forced cession of territory. Following the American Revolutionary War, the British ceded all lands east of the Mississippi to the United States without consulting their Indigenous allies, treating tribal lands as conquered territory. This pattern intensified during the 19th century, particularly after the War of 1812 and the Creek War, where tribes were coerced into signing treaties that traded millions of acres of fertile ancestral homelands for much smaller, often less productive plots in the West. Even the land promised to them permanently was later eroded by policies like the Dawes Act of 1887, which broke up communal tribal lands into small individual allotments and sold the surplus to white settlers. By the end of the Indian Wars, Native American landholdings had plummeted from roughly 150 million acres to a mere 50 million acres, leaving many nations confined to impoverished reservations that were a fraction of their original size.
